Development

Project management involves designing, organizing, and executing plans appropriate for each client’s proposed objectives and for the ultimate objective of generating electricity from a given geothermal resource. Each stage in geothermal development is based on specific objectives, beginning with initial surface exploration (and/or legacy-data review) and culminating in the successful operation and maintenance of a geothermal power plant. DG has managed several international geothermal projects and project management is a core part of its service portfolio.

Development efforts are vital to advancing from exploring a resource toward confirming a bankable and profitable project. After a geothermal resource has been identified, assessed, and deemed fit for exploitation, development steps are key in obtaining financing, beginning construction, and eventually generating power. DG’s full suite of development services includes, but is not limited to: geothermal drilling, well design, well siting, civil engineering, geotechnical design, infrastructure planning, social and environmental impact assessments, and capacity building.

Civil Infrastructure

Access is one of the most important issues facing any geothermal project. Establishing a main access road for cars, utility trucks, and commercial vehicles is critical to project success. Geothermal projects are often sited at remote locations with inadequate or hazardous existing access roads. The condition of existing roads determines the speed of project development.  Roadway improvement and/or new construction is sometimes necessary.

A comprehensive road study includes:
• Road design criteria
• Condition assessments of culverts, bridges, and other structures condition
• Geohazard identification and grading
• Construction materials and cost reports
• 3D roadway-design modeling

Drilling Engineering and Supervision

Drilling is necessary to reach a geothermal resource. Drilling allows a developer to access samples of subsurface rock and soil in order to determine characteristics such as thermal conductivity, porosity, permeability, temperature gradients, and other useful parameters for evaluating a geothermal reservoir.

Well-Site Geology

DG’s skillset allows for on-site identification and interpretation of drill samples. Well-site geology is the first data available during the drilling phase and is key to careful project
monitoring. Expert interpretation of well-site geology also aids in determining whether it is appropriate to continue, modify, or halt a drill plan.

Social Impact Assessment

DG’s signature “Exploration, Education, Community” (EEC) philosophy has earned us awards and recognition as an industry leader on Social Impact Assessment (SIA) within the geothermal exploration and development community. DG believes that each of EEC’s three components is key for successful project completion. Participatory development that
includes the local population as a recognized stakeholder is essential for achieving the objectives of a geothermal project.

Exploration includes the scientific aspects of project development, so that appropriate sites may be located, studied, and finally exploited.

Education includes hiring local workers and providing job training, along with technology transfer to clients and local universities.

Community outreach considers the current needs of local populations, as well as the social impact of any future development that might occur as a result of the exploration phase of the project.
